Effectiveness of Cannabidiol Oil for Pediatric Anxiety and Insomnia as Part of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a constituent of cannabis that has been demonstrated by laboratory research to deliver anxiety-relieving, anti-inflammatory benefits without psychoactive effects. However, clinical data on the therapeutic benefits and safety profile of CBD, especially in young children, are limited.

An early case of effectiveness of CBD oil in treating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a pediatric patient was reported in 2016. The patient, a 10-year-old girl at the time of treatment, was sexually abused and received minimal parental supervision as a young child. She was initially diagnosed with PTSD at the age of 7, having experienced major symptoms including anxiety and sleep disorders, which contributed to her impaired ability to focus and oppositional behaviors. Over 3 years following diagnosis, she received various pharmaceutical medications, but the relief was only partial and not long-lasting, with major side effects. A trial of CBD oil was initiated during a clinic revisit when the patient demonstrated unabated prominent symptoms. Results were encouraging: the girl experienced a sustained decrease in anxiety and steady improvement in the quality and quantity of sleep.

Physicians suggest that this case provides clinical data supporting the use of CBD oil as a safe and efficient treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in pediatric patients, such as those suffering from PTSD. However, they acknowledge that follow-up studies, as well as controlled, large-scaled trials, are required before CBD can be medically recommended as a standard therapy.

Do you have any experiences with CBD or pediatric cannabis use? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
