A recent ACLU study found that cannabis-related arrests have increased in states in which cannabis remains illegal. To make matters worse, racial disparities in arrests since 2010 have worsened in 31 states. The ACLU states, “black people are still more likely to be arrested for possession than white people that have legalized or decriminalized marijuana.”
Even though cannabis reform is making strides across the country, it’s important to recognize the still-prevalent racism behind prohibition. Cannabis reform is more than just a political movement, it’s a human rights movement.
